Muriwai, Rocks and Birds and plants and things.

If you find your head in need of a wobble, any of Auckland’s West Coast beaches will do the trick.

Gannets love this place. They fly all the way from Australia to find a mate and start a family. Mums, dads and kids make their own way back to Australia.

Sandstone with banding.

Volcanic debris washed from the slopes of the Waitakere volcano. It stopped erupting about 15 million years ago. It takes a lot longer to form the hard sandstones I came across at Hever Castle in the Italian Garden. (Earlier post)

World famous Rocks

The best exposure of pillow lavas in the world on show here.

A gathering of gulls.

Plenty of room.

Usually the sea stack is dangerously overcrowded with gannets. More space than usual this year. No-one goes without a home or a feed in Gannet City at Christmas.

Happy families.

Chicks look healthy. They need to grow up fast and learn to fly before heading off to Australia. They fly non stop.

Gravity is the weakest of all the forces, but….

He got airborne after watching gannets. They run down a slope and let the wind take over. Their landing technique is far superior. This guy nearly landed on top of the cars parked by the public toilets.

Yellow wavelengths assault the retina like no other.

Picture This identifies the plant as a Beach Gazania. I thought it was a big daisy.

Colour in the Car Park.

Rocks and birds and plants. That’s my last pic this afternoon.

Last One.
